An analytical–numerical method for the hydraulic–mechanical coupling analysis of time-dependent behavior of pressurized tunnels: Impact of an excavation damaged zone

The issue of pressurized tunnels has been sufficiently investigated in the literature; nevertheless, the long-term behavior of the problem, which is the case in very squeezing conditions, remains unexplored. From a practical standpoint, the development of a damaged zone around the tunnel, due to the poor quality of blasting for excavation, imposes an additional challenge in predicting tunnel responses. This paper introduces an analytical approach addressing both water seepage and the excavation damaged zone (EDZ) concerning the long-term behavior of lined circular pressurized tunnels. To achieve this goal, the rheological behaviors of the initial rock mass and damaged zone are modeled using the Burgers model, along with considering the time-dependent variation in the rock mass hydraulic conductivity. After the validation of the model, the conducted parametric studies reveal that rock mass and lining hydraulic conductivities, EDZ radius, and the Burger shear modulus are the most influential parameters.

Prediction of the hydraulic conductivity function for unsaturated soils over the entire suction range

The hydraulic conductivity function (HCF) refers to in this paper is the variation of hydraulic conductivity over the entire suction range from 0 to 10<sup>6</sup> kPa. Most of the available HCF models in the literature are derived based on capillary theory and have limitations in the explanation of HCF in the high suction range. Recently, several models have been proposed for accounting for the thin film flow dominated by the adsorbed water in the high suction range. However, these models require measured HCF data for describing the thin film flow, which is time-consuming. In this study, a mathematically continuous and simple model is proposed for predicting the HCF. The model has physically meaningful parameters for predicting the HCF. In this model, the residual suction estimated from the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) is used to distinguish the capillary and adsorption-dominated regions, and a correction operator that considers the thin film flow is introduced. The performance of the model was validated using the measured and published experimental data for various soils. In addition, the proposed model is successfully applied in a numerical investigation of the hydraulic behavior of a capillary barrier system, highlighting the role of the thin film flow.

Is Biomethane Production from Common Reed Biomass Influenced by the Hydraulic Parameters of Treatment Wetlands?

Treatment wetlands (TWs) are Nature-Based Solutions which have been increasingly used worldwide for wastewater (WW) treatment as they are able to remove mineral and organic pollutants through both physical and biochemical processes. Besides the reusable effluent, the TWs produce, as their main output, plant biomass that needs to be harvested and disposed of at least once a year with significant management costs and causing the TW to be temporarily out of service. This study aims (i) to evaluate the potential of TWs’ biomass for local energy production and (ii) to understand the effects of TWs’ hydraulic conductivity (Ks) on the biomass biomethane yield. Specifically, this was addressed by determining the Biochemical Methane Potential of common reed (CR) (Phragmites australis) samples collected at three harvest times from the 10-year-old horizontal subsurface treatment wetland (HSTW) used as a secondary WW treatment system for the IKEA® store situated in Catania (Eastern Sicily, Italy). Furthermore, the falling-head test was conducted to assess the hydraulic conductivity (Ks) variation in the hydraulic conductivity (Ks) of the HSTW, in order to understand its influence on the CR biomethane production. The average methane content values were 130.57 Nm3CH4/tVS (±24.29), 212.70 Nm3CH4/tVS (±50.62) and 72.83 Nm3CH4/tVS (±23.19) in August, September, October 2022, respectively. Ks was correlated with both dry matter (R2 = 0.58) and fiber content (R2 = 0.74) and, consequently, affected the biomethane yield, which increased as the Ks increased (R2 = 0.30 in August; R2 = 0.57 in September). In the framework of a circular economy, the results showed the successful possibility of integrating bioenergy production into TWs. The research could contribute (i) to encouraging plant operators to reuse biomass from TWs for local energy production and (ii) to help plant operators to understand Ks effects on the biomass biomethane yield in order to increase the sustainability of the system and to reduce the maintenance costs.

Hydraulic conductivity tensor of anisotropic soils: the impact on seepage flow

Natural or artificial changes in soil stratigraphic-plane (i.e., the deposition of soil and sediments into distinct layers) orientation can cause variations in hydraulic conductivity in different direction. Hydraulic conductivity must, therefore, be considered – in this case – as a nondiagonal, full tensor to appropriately represent the effect of the orientation of soil stratigraphic planes on the seepage flow pattern. This paper introduces the derivation of the formula for the three-dimensional nondiagonal hydraulic conductivity full tensor calculation in terms of azimuth and vertical angles. Furthermore, two-dimensional numerical simulations of the seepage flow beneath a concrete dam are presented to demonstrate the need to account for the nondiagonal elements of the hydraulic conductivity tensor in anisotropic soils of varying degrees of stratigraphic tilt with respect to the coordinate system.

Multi-step modeling of well logging data combining unsupervised and deep learning algorithms for enhanced characterization of the Quaternary aquifer system in Debrecen area, Hungary

AbstractIn this research, a multi-step modeling approach is followed using unsupervised and deep learning algorithms to interpret the geophysical well-logging data for improved characterization of the Quaternary aquifer system in the Debrecen area, Hungary. The Most Frequent Value-Assisted Cluster Analysis (MFV-CA) is used to map lithological variations within the aquifer system. Additionally, the Csókás method is used to discern both vertical and horizontal fluctuations in hydraulic conductivity. MFV-CA is introduced to cope with the limitation of the conventional Euclidean distance-based k-means clustering known for its low resistance to outlying values, resulting in deformed cluster formation. However, the computational time and demands of MFV-CA are evident, making them costly and time-consuming. As a result, Deep Learning (DL) methods are suggested to provide fast characterization of the groundwater aquifers. These methods include Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Networks (MLPNN), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), which are implemented for classification and regression. The classification categorized the inputs into three distinct lithologies trained initially by the results of MFV-CA. At the same time, the regression model offered a continuous estimations of hydraulic conductivity trained by the results of the Csókás model. The results demonstrated significant compatibility between the outcomes derived from the clustering and Csókás approaches and DL algorithms. Accordingly, the lithofacies and hydraulic conductivity variations across the main hydrostratigraphical units are mapped. This integration enhanced the understanding of the groundwater system, offering promising inputs for groundwater and development and management.

Effect of movability of water on the low-velocity pre-Darcy flow in clay soil

Water seepage in soil is a fundamental problem involving various scientific and engineering fields. According to the literature, low-velocity water seepage in low-permeability porous media, such as clay, does not follow Darcy's law, also known as pre-Darcy flow. The formation of immovable water due to water adsorption on the pore wall is believed to be responsible for the formation of pre-Darcy flow. However, this view lacks direct solid evidence. To investigate the pre-Darcy water flow in clay, head permeability experiments are conducted on six clay samples with different densities. The results indicate that water seepage in clay at low hydraulic gradients does not follow Darcy's law. A clear nonlinear relationship between flow velocity and hydraulic gradient is observed. Water flow in clay can be divided into the pre-Darcy flow and Darcy flow regions by the critical hydraulic gradient, which is 10–12 for the Albic soil with dry density between 1.3 g/cm3 and 1.8 g/cm3. According to the disjoining pressure theory, immovable water due to water adsorption on the pore wall is the primary reason for water flow deviating from Darcy's law in clay. The results indicate that the percentage of movable water ranges from 39.7% to 59.3% for the six samples at a hydraulic gradient of 1. As the hydraulic gradient increases, the percentage of moveable water also increases. Additionally, there is a strong correlation between the percentage of movable water and the variation in hydraulic conductivity with the hydraulic gradient. Furthermore, a quantitative relationship between the percentage of movable water and the hydraulic conductivity has been established. The results of this study suggest that water adsorption on the pore wall not only affects the water movability, but is also closely related to the pre-Darcy flow phenomenon in clay.

A comparative study of critical failure surface in unsaturated soil slopes

Landslides are rapid downslope movements triggered by factors such as rainfall, earthquakes, or human activity, where factors like relative permeability, air flow, and variations in hydraulic conductivity affect the mechanisms behind rainfall infiltration and landslide occurrence. This study investigates these phenomena using the finite difference method (FDM) and finite element method (FEM) in FLAC and PLAXIS software. These methods account for the coexistence of water and air, including the Two-phase flow option, in evaluating unsaturated slope stability and identifying critical failure surfaces. The efficiency of these approaches is gauged by varying soil parameters and exploring the impact of different values of suction and hydraulic conductivity, as well as soil-water characteristics, on the safety factor. It was observed that there are disparities between both software packages at high suction values, which impact the safety factor. FLAC is noted for its conservative approach and superiority in representing unfavourable conditions.

Compaction-induced variability in the 80/20 sand-bentonite mixture: Spatial variation in dry density at different scales in the laboratory and large-scale gas seal test

Sand-bentonite (SB) mixtures are considered as backfill materials for sealing designated sections of nuclear waste repositories. The dry density of the SB mixture is the crucial parameter for the quality control during emplacement because it strongly controls the hydraulic and mechanical properties. Backfilling of an SB mixture is often performed layer by layer by keeping track of the average dry density of each layer. The compaction is typically done in a dynamic manner leading to more compaction near the compaction surface. In this study, an SB mixture with 80% sand and 20% bentonite was compacted in the laboratory by static and dynamic procedures to a height of 10 cm and the dry density profile was characterized by destructive slicing and microfocus X-ray CT imaging. When dynamically compacted, a distinct dry density gradient was identified. The variation in the dry density identified by the slicing was as much as 0.4 g/cm3 which leads to hydraulic conductivity variation by a factor of 4.8. The SB seal emplaced in the large-scale gas seal test (GAST) for demonstrating the effective functioning of the gas permeable seals was also analyzed to identify if any variability was present at the field scale. The samples collected from the top 2 cm of each 10 cm-thick horizontal layers yielded a higher overall average by 0.06 g/cm3 than the average of the mass balance method. In conjunction with the laboratory studies, it was implied that sampling results, if only collected from the very top few centimeters of the layers, could lead to an overestimation in the global dry density. Overall, the results with different methods at different scales indicated that the dynamic compaction-induced variability within a single layer was more pronounced than the variability in the larger scales detected in the mass balance and sampling methods.

Numerical modeling of site-scale groundwater flow with stochastic parameterized hydraulic conductivity fields for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste in China

Deep geological disposal is internationally accepted as a feasible and safe approach for high-level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal. To evaluate hydrogeological conditions in support of safety assessments for HLW disposal at the Xinchang preselected site in China, stochastic inverse models of site-scale groundwater flow were developed in this study to generate highly parameterized hydraulic conductivity fields for the fractured medium by adopting pilot point and null-space Monte Carlo methods. The hydraulic influence zones of the faults were carefully considered to have homogenous parameter values across the zones. A total of 120 multiple random realizations were generated to characterize the 3D spatial variations in hydraulic conductivity by conditioning to 1218 fixed pilot points. The simulated hydraulic heads of the realizations were in good agreement with observational data. The hydraulic conductivity fields close to the boreholes could be characterized in detail and had relatively low uncertainties. Furthermore, the hydraulic conductivity (K) values around underground research laboratory (URL) at the HLW disposal zone depth were less than 10−9 m/s. The K values obtained for most of the influence zones of these faults at this depth were consistent with hydraulic test data and ranged from 10−10 to 10−9 m/s, thereby indicating that the surrounding rock has low permeability and is suitable for HLW disposal. These findings offer new insights into hydrogeological conditions by providing key information on the permeability characteristics that need further focus on HLW disposal.

Seasonal scour and siltation induced spatiotemporal variations in riverbed sediment leakage coefficients as measured via the thermal tracer method

Riverbed scour and siltation can change the hydraulic conductivity and thickness of sediments, leading to notable spatiotemporal variations of groundwater–surface water interaction. However, correlated quantitative research on the dynamic leakage coefficient (LC) remains lacking under riverbed scour and siltation. Based on dynamic monitoring and analysis of sediment medium properties, river-groundwater levels, and temperature profiles in the section of Liao River, this study compared the applicable conditions of different thermal analytical models and identified spatiotemporal variations in the LC values induced by riverbed scour and siltation. The results showed that: (1) The thermal tracer method combined with river-groundwater level monitoring can effectively quantify spatiotemporal variations in the LCs of riverbed sediment. Based on the sediment temperature presents diurnal fluctuations and gradient characteristics in different seasons, the LCs in summer, spring, and autumn compared to winter in seasonally frozen regions should be calculated using transient and steady-state analytical solution models, respectively. (2) The LCs ranged from 0.47 to 24.90 × 10-6 s−1, showed larger temporal variability than spatial, increased from the river bank to the center, and had larger values in autumn and winter. (3) Distinct from previous findings, the riverbed underwent a scouring process associated with reductions in the incoming sediment coefficient as the river stage shifted from high to low, eroding the surface 4–8 cm of sediment. During this process, the LC increased by 40 to 420%. Further, the influence of riverbed scour and siltation on the LC varied by river section. Near the riverbank, the sediment LC was primarily controlled by hydraulic conductivity related to the coarsening of sediment lithology; however, it was influenced by variations in both sediment thickness and hydraulic conductivity near the riverbed center. Collectively, these results further understand the mechanisms underlying changes in the sediment LC induced by riverbed scour and siltation, as well as provide a scientific basis for ensuring the sustainable development of riverside water sources under such changes.

The Permeafor: A Rapid Tool for Field Hydraulic Conductivity Testing in Granular Soils

Abstract There are currently several in situ and laboratory methods of determining the hydraulic conductivity of soils. However, it remains difficult to obtain representative hydraulic conductivity profiles rapidly and economically, especially on projects in which values are required over large areas and at numerous depths. Furthermore, there is an emerging need in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering to profile this parameter in situ, such as for the design of water infiltration systems and retention ponds or for evaluation of contaminant fate and transport, which has resulted in a greater demand to improve existing methods or develop new, rapid, and reliable techniques. A proposed alternative to measure hydraulic conductivity in granular soils is to use a Permeafor, an instrument originally developed in France to evaluate variations in hydraulic conductivity in situ. This variation is assessed by observing water flow into the soil, at any given depth, under an applied hydraulic head. The ratio of flow to hydraulic head is used as an indicator of hydraulic conductivity variations with depth. A Permeafor system was designed, built, and field tested at several sites across New Hampshire. The results from more than 120 field tests at sites with granular soils demonstrated the potential of the Permeafor to rapidly generate profiles of hydraulic conductivity. The Permeafor is a useful tool in bridging the gap between time-consuming testing of few locations and large-scale hydraulic conductivity testing. This article introduces the Permeafor design, its supporting equipment, and control software and provides some examples of results obtained at a test site in New Hampshire.

Spatiotemporal variations of sand hydraulic conductivity by microbial application methods

The spatiotemporal distributions of microbes in soil by different methods could affect the efficacy of the microbes to reduce the soil hydraulic conductivity. In this study, the specimens of bio-mediated sands were prepared using three different methods, i.e. injecting, mixing, and pouring a given microbial solution onto compacted sand specimens. The hydraulic conductivity was measured by constant-head tests, while any soil microstructural changes due to addition of the microbes were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests. The amount of dextran concentration produced by microbes in each type of specimen was quantified by a refractometer. Results show that dextran production increased exponentially after 5–7 d of microbial settling with the supply of culture medium. The injection and mixing methods resulted in a similar amount and uniform distribution of dextran in the specimens. The pouring method, however, produced a nonuniform distribution, with a higher concentration near the specimen surface. As the supply of culture medium discontinued, the dextran content near the surface produced by the pouring method decreased dramatically due to high competition for nutrients with foreign colonies. Average dextran concentration was negatively and correlated with hydraulic conductivity of bio-mediated soils exponentially, due to the clogging of large soil pores by dextran. The hydraulic conductivity of the injection and mixing cases did not change significantly when the supply of culture medium was absent.

Two-phase modeling of fluid injection inside subcutaneous layer of skin

The motivation of this present theoretical investigation comes from the delivery of various drugs and vaccines through subcutaneous injection (SCI) to the human body. In the SCI procedure, a medical person takes a big pinch of skin of the injection applicable area of a patient to pull the subcutaneous layer (SCL) from the underlying muscle layer to smooth the execution of the procedure. Generally, the human skin, particularly SCL, is a heterogeneous and anisotropic living material. The major constituents of the SCL are adipose cells or fat cells and interstitial fluid. These adipose cells are oriented in such a way that the hydraulic conductivity of the SCL exhibits anisotropy. Consequently, one can adopt the field equations of mixture theory to describe the continuum nature of SCL. This mathematical modeling involves a perturbation technique where the small aspect ratio of the SCL provides a valid perturb parameter. This study highlights the issue of the mechanical response of the adipose tissue in terms of the anisotropic hydraulic conductivity variation, the viscosity of the injected drug, the mean depth of subcutaneous tissue, etc. In particular, the computed stress fields can measure the intensity of pain experienced by a patient after this procedure. Also, this study discusses the biomechanical impact of the creation of one or more eddy structure(s) due to the high pressure developed, increased tissue anisotropy, fluid viscosity, etc., within the area of applying injection.

A Review of Physicochemical Stabilization for Improved Engineering Properties of Clays

Severe climatic and environmental conditions warrant the use of stabilization agents in aid of compaction for sustainable improvement in engineering properties of clays. Physicochemical agents are a viable option because they are cost effective, environmentally friendly, and offer improved long-term performance of treated soils. This research developed a fundamental understanding of the clay–water–electrolyte admixtures relations. Based on a comprehensive literature review, the effect of nanomaterials, biopolymers, and geopolymers on the behavior of compacted clays was investigated. It was found that all of these admixtures facilitate the development of an aggregated soil microstructure through unique mechanisms. Biopolymers have the highest water adsorption capacity followed by geopolymers and then by nanomaterials. The effect of admixtures on optimum compaction properties follows a decreasing trend similar to untreated clays (S = 80% ± 20%). The variation of hydraulic conductivity, compression index, and compressive strength are largely within the family of curves identified by typical relationships for compacted clays. These preliminary findings indicate that not all engineering properties are improved to the same level by the different types of physicochemical admixtures. The specific nature of geotechnical engineering (soil type and site conditions) as well as the wide range of admixture types and potential biodegradation of some of the reagents are the major shortcoming of using this class of materials.

Stochastic seepage analysis in embankment dams using different types of random fields

Random field theory has become a very popular approach for probabilistic analysis of earth dams. This study performs a stochastic analysis of seepage through an embankment dam to account for the spatial variability of hydraulic parameters. The originality of this study consists in using and comparing three types of Random Fields RFs for the seepage analysis: classical stationary RFs, conditional RFs (to consider the position of available measurements), and non-stationary RFs (to consider the mean variation with depth). The same sample of hydraulic conductivity values is considered to generate the three types of random fields. The hydraulic conductivity RFs are integrated into a Finite Element seepage analysis model to evaluate the flow velocity, hydraulic gradient, pore water pressure, and flow rate. The process is repeated by Monte Carlo simulations to characterize the spatial variability of the seepage results in terms of mean and standard deviation at each point of the studied dam and its foundation. The results show a higher dispersion for the stationary RF case and a lower dispersion for the conditional RF case. For the case study, the results also show that the use of different RFs for modelling the spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity induces differences that can be considered significant for flow velocity, moderate for hydraulic gradient and minor for pore pressure.

Cross-Hole and Vadose-Zone Infiltration Tracer Test Analyses to Determine Aquifer Reactive Transport Parameters at a Former Uranium Mill Site (Grand Junction, Colorado)

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management is responsible for the long-term care and maintenance of former uranium mill sites in the United States. Prior predictions of site flushing times (monitored natural attenuation) are not being met due to the presence of secondary contaminant sources associated with uranium-rich sediments in the vadose zone and organic-rich sediments near the water table below and near former mill tailings (tailings have been moved to a separate disposal site). Updated sitewide modeling for future releases of contaminants (including uranium) from these secondary sources to the groundwater need appropriate input parameters. To test field techniques, two cross-hole tracer tests and one infiltration tracer test were completed at a former uranium mill site in Grand Junction, Colorado. Reactive transport modeling was completed to derive physical and geochemical parameters. The observed data from saturated zone cross-hole tracer testing was adequately simulated using PHT-USG (reactive transport model) and PEST++ (calibration routine) with reasonable estimates of hydraulic conductivity, dispersion, effective porosity, cation exchange, calcite saturation index, and uranium sorption potential. The use of multiple layering in one cross-hole model was able to capture hydraulic conductivity variations with depth, which produced a double hump in the tracer concentrations. Estimated parameter values were very similar to prior estimates from column testing and single-well push–pull testing, except for a lower uranium sorption potential in one cross-hole test. This difference is likely due to the larger scale of the cross-hole testing including pathways with a lower uranium sorption potential. The infiltration testing released constituents from the vadose zone that can contribute to ongoing groundwater contamination. Modeling simulated the immediate release of these constituents to the water table similar to downward displacement of the existing residual porewater. Delayed drainage of the infiltration water was more difficult to simulate. However, the overall contaminant release concentrations from the vadose-zone secondary sources and ongoing groundwater contamination are adequately simulated for current site purposes. Additional details on vadose-zone processes may be needed if various remedial fluids are evaluated.

Innovative hydrogeophysical approach for detecting the spatial distribution of hydraulic conductivity in Bahri city, Sudan: A comparative study of Csókás and Heigold methods

Hydraulic conductivity is one of the crucial parameters used to identify the potentiality and productivity of groundwater aquifers. This research employs an integrated approach using geophysical well logging, exploratory factor analysis and surface electrical resistivity methods to detect the vertical and horizontal variation of hydraulic conductivity in Bahri city, Sudan. Based on the geophysical well logs of Spontaneous potential (SP), natural gamma ray (GR), and electrical resistivity (RS), Csókás method is used to determine the continuous variation of hydraulic conductivity along the aquifer. Csókás method is an experimentally modified version of the Kozeny–Carman equation and is based on the formation factor of the groundwater aquifer and the effective grain size. This approach is performed in three groundwater boreholes, and the obtained hydraulic conductivities showed a close agreement with that of the pumping test analysis. Furthermore, the hydraulic conductivity is measured using multivariate statistical factor analysis. This statistical approach relies on the correlation between the extracted factors and petrophysical and hydrogeological parameters. In this research, a strong negative linear correlation between the first factor and hydraulic conductivity is indicated. Consequently, a site-specific equation is suggested for continuous estimation of hydraulic conductivity along the aquifer. In the last stage, the results obtained from the Csókás method are interpolated with vertical electrical sounding (VES) measurements using to detect the horizontal variation of hydraulic conductivity throughout the studied area. This was achieved by combining the hydraulic conductivities of geophysical well logging and vertical electrical soundings to obtain a consistent estimation. As a result, the variation of hydraulic conductivity is obtained, and the average was 1.9 m/day which shows a close agreement with the average of the previous investigations (1.5 m/day). This approach is highly recommended since it can enhance data coverage, cutting down the expense of hydrogeological investigations and lowering the uncertainty of the hydrogeological models.

Evaluation of Soil Infiltration Variability in Compacted and Uncompacted Soil Using Two Devices

Infiltration is defined by the expression of the hydraulic conductivity of the soil, which we decided to monitor on an experimental field applying a modern system of land management (control traffic farming). The present study compared two different methods of monitoring the hydraulic conductivity of soil on a selected 16 ha plot of land in the suburbs of the village Kolíňany (Slovak Republic). During the growing seasons, crops such as oilseed rape, winter wheat, spring barley, winter barley, spring peas, and maize alternated in individual years. In addition to the study of hydraulic conductivity, a long-term experiment is underway to investigate the influence of technogenic factors on soil degradation using a system of controlled movement of machines in the field. A mini disk infiltrometer (method one) was used to evaluate the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of the soil, and a double ring infiltrometer (method two) was used to measure the saturated hydraulic conductivity. Monitoring changes in soil infiltration capacity within the compacted and uncompacted lines required 26 monitoring points (20 for method one and 6 for method two). The first longitudinal line was compacted by an agricultural machinery chassis, and the second line remained uncompressed. The research also created transverse compacted lines at eight monitoring points (six for method one and two for method two). The results did not show a statistically significant difference when examining the effect of soil infiltration monitoring (compacted p = 0.123; uncompacted p = 0.99). When evaluating the statistical dependence on the compression caused by machinery in the track line, the hypothesis of significance was not confirmed (p = 0.12, at the level of 0.05). However, the results showed variability in the value of the difference factor between the two methods, ranging from 0 to 0.24. On average, it can be concluded that the results achieved using the double ring infiltrometer were 4.16 times higher than those measured with the mini disk infiltrometer. The variability of hydraulic conductivity was demonstrated not only in the compacted but also in the non-compacted part of the plot. In some places, the phenomenon of water repellency appeared, which could be caused by the drier location of the targeted plot.

Geostatistical simulations of the spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity in an alluvial-marine sedimentary system in Beihai City, China

Sustainable aquifer management in coastal cities is becoming critically important due to the challenges of climate variability amidst population growth. Study of the aquifer heterogeneity is effective in highlighting the aquifer behavior. In this study, we took the case of Beihai to explore the heterogeneity of its subsurface system. 8629 samples from 111 boreholes were divided into four hydrofacies units as discrete geological variables according to their hydraulic conductivities (K) and used as input datasets for the models. Sequential Indicator Simulation (SISIM) and Transition Probability Geostatistical Simulation (T-PROGS) were employed to construct 3D hydrofacies stochastic models. The simulated results realistically represent horizontal river-driven sediment distribution and vertical deposition processes of K in the aquifer, where the northeastern part is mainly composed of low K and the southern part forms the main multi-layered aquifer system with progressively increasing medium and high K. With a comparative analysis on the ability of capturing geological characteristics using both SISIM and T-PROGS, it highlighted that SISIM reduces initial data requirements without the need of Gaussian transformation and is more broadly applicable, while T-PROGS prefers considering the internal correlation of hydrofacies units and is applicable in environments where lateral accumulation is prevalent. This study demonstrates the credibility of stochastic simulation methods in recreating complex costal sedimentary environments, which provide environment for further groundwater modeling and exploration. Multi-interleaved source data and more accurate algorithms will be integrated in aquifer heterogeneity as subsequent research priorities.

Modeling EDTA-facilitated cadmium migration in high- and low-permeability systems using MODFLOW and RT3D

Cadmium (Cd) has impacted groundwater resources and can pose a serious threat to human health and the environment. Its fate in groundwater is complex and challenging to predict, as it is affected by adsorption to sediments, complexation with aqueous phase ligands, and variations in hydraulic conductivity. In this study, a 2D reactive transport model based on MODFLOW and RT3D is used to simulate published experimental results of cadmium migration without and with EDTA present in a flow cell containing high- and low-permeability zones (i.e., HPZs and LPZs). The model is then extended to conceptual flow cells with more complex LPZ configurations. Simulation results generally match the experimental data well, and analysis of experimental and simulated Cd effluent concentration profiles shows that EDTA enhances Cd removal from LPZs relative to water alone. Simulation results indicate that faster Cd removal is due to EDTA complexation with adsorbed Cd in LPZs, which enhances its solubilization and subsequent back diffusion. Lastly, simulation results show that with increasing LPZ heterogeneity more Cd is retained in flow cells, and EDTA is more effective in enhancing Cd removal relative to water alone; these results are attributed to more LPZ-HPZ interfaces that enhance Cd mass transfer into LPZs during contamination, and enhance EDTA mass transfer into LPZs to promote cleanup. Overall, the results highlight the promise of using EDTA to remove Cd from heterogeneous sites, but caution is advised due to model simplicity and lack of consideration of changes in solution pH, redox potential, or competing cations.
